Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a collaborative, person-centered approach that helps individuals explore and resolve ambivalence about change. At its core is the spirit of MI, grounded in partnership, acceptance, compassion, and evocation—honoring a person’s autonomy while drawing out their own motivations for change rather than imposing them. MI emphasizes recognizing and responding to resistance not as opposition, but as a signal to shift strategies, using empathy, reflective listening, and curiosity to reduce defensiveness and build trust. Through the development of practical skills—such as open-ended questions, affirmations, reflective listening, and summarizing—helpers learn how to guide meaningful conversations that strengthen motivation, support self-efficacy, and move individuals toward sustainable change.
